Official quarterly UK counts of how many of a model are still licensed or declared SORN, from Department for Transport and DVLA data. At the end of 2026 Q1 there were 40,514,841 licensed and 5,831,463 SORN vehicles across 3,288 published model groups. This is population data, not the live status of a specific registration.

Licensed means taxed and legal to use on the road at the end of that quarter. SORN means the keeper has told DVLA it is kept off the road — it still exists, but it is not in use. Added together they are the best available proxy for how many of a model survive.
The figures are grouped by DfT's generic model, so a group can span body styles and generations, and DVLA make and model fields are administrative data that can carry inconsistencies. Treat a single quarter as a snapshot and the trend as the story.
A falling population matters to a buyer: fewer cars on the road means fewer donor parts, fewer specialists who know the model, and a slower sale when your turn comes. A good example of a scarce car can hold its value while a neglected one becomes hard to sell at any price.

- Why is my model not listed?
- DfT only publishes model groups above a reporting threshold, and very small populations are withheld to protect confidentiality. Rare models may sit inside a broader group.
