Not sure what the report means? Ask Frank.

Frank reads a car's history and tells you, in plain English, whether it's safe to buy — "mileage dropped 9k and it's a Cat N, I'd walk away," or "this one's clean, here's what to check on the viewing."

Car check questions, answered

Is the car check really free?

Yes. The free UK car check pulls MOT history, mileage, tax status and MOT advisories from official DVLA and DVSA data — no sign-up and no card needed. You only pay if you choose the full history check.

What does a history check show that the free check doesn't?

The full history check adds outstanding finance, write-off markers (Cat S/N, formerly Cat C/D), a stolen-vehicle check, mileage anomalies and clocking risk, salvage and auction history, plate and colour changes, and the number of previous keepers.

How do I know if a used car is safe to buy?

Start with the free check for the MOT and mileage history, then run a full history check before buying privately or spending more than a few thousand pounds. Frank reads the results and tells you in plain English whether to walk away or what to look at on the viewing.

What's a Cat S or Cat N car?

Both mean an insurer wrote the car off and it was repaired. Cat S had structural damage; Cat N had non-structural damage. They're legal to drive but worth less and only as good as the repair — our history check flags them.

Where does the data come from?

The free check uses the DVLA vehicle enquiry service and the DVSA MOT history API. The full history check uses UK Vehicle Data (UKVD), the same upstream data the big providers resell.
