Can You Drive Without an MOT?
Quick answer
No, apart from one exception: you may drive to or from a pre-arranged MOT test, or to a garage for repairs. Any other journey on a public road risks a fine of up to £1,000, and up to £2,500 with three penalty points if the vehicle is in a dangerous condition. The law allows the journey, not the vehicle's general use. Everything below has to be true at the same time.
- The test or repair appointment is already booked — booking it afterwards does not help
- You are going to or from that appointment, by a sensible route
- The vehicle is roadworthy: an MOT exemption for the journey is not an exemption from being safe
- It is insured, and the insurer knows there is no MOT
- It is taxed, or the journey is one a SORN vehicle is allowed to make — to or from a pre-booked test
Enforcement does not depend on being stopped: number-plate cameras read tax and MOT status, and an untaxed or untested car on the road is visible to them.

Vehicle tax and the MOT are linked: DVLA will not tax a vehicle that needs an MOT and does not have a valid one. That is why "I will tax it when I get home" does not work as a plan, and why a car whose MOT expired months ago is usually untaxed or SORN as well.
A seller who offers you a test drive in a car with no MOT is either mistaken or hoping you are. The pre-booked test exception is for the keeper taking it to the test — it is not cover for a prospective buyer driving it around the block.
Inspect it on private land, or make the purchase conditional on a fresh MOT. If you are collecting it, either book the test and drive straight there, or arrange transport. Trailering a car home costs less than a £1,000 fine and an invalid insurance policy.
